AFL-CIO Blasts the Green New Deal, Calling It ‘Not Achievable or Realistic’

The AFL-CIO, which is the largest federation of unions in the United States, blasted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Ed Markey’s (D-MA) Green New Deal, calling it “not achievable or realistic” in a letter sent last week.

“We welcome the call for labor rights and dialogue with labor, but the Green New Deal resolution is far too short on specific solutions that speak to the jobs of our members and the critical sections of our economy,” the AFL-CIO’s energy committee wrote. “We will not accept proposals that could cause immediate harm to millions of our members and their families. We will not stand by and allow threats to our members’ jobs and their families’ standard of living go [sic] unanswered.”

The letter was signed by Cecil Roberts, president of the United Mine Workers of America, and Lonnie Stephenson, president of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. It was sent to Ocasio-Cortez and Markey, the lead sponsors of the resolution.

Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) tweeted the full letter, saying that he agreed with the AFL-CIO’s assessment of the Green New Deal.

“We will continue to work and partner w @AFLCIO, who is right to say that ‘doing nothing is not an option,’ Markey tweeted on Tuesday in response to the labor organization’s letter.

Ocasio-Cortez has not yet responded the AFL-CIO’s criticism.
