Representative-Elect Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) is quickly becoming one of the most well-known new members of Congress, though it may not be what Crenshaw expected when he first ran for office.

The newly-elected member of the U.S. House, hailing from Texas’s Second Congressional District – which includes most of northern and western Houston – became a household name after comedian Pete Davidson of “Saturday Night Live” mocked his eye patch.

Davidson wears the eye patch because he lost an eye fighting for the U.S. in Afghanistan.

As other people became outraged on Crenshaw’s behalf, the Texan focused on other veterans in a tweet that went viral:

It gets better, though. This past weekend, Crenshaw joined Davidson on “Saturday Night Live.” Davidson apologized and both sides made up. Crenshaw had a bit of fun at Davidson’s expense with a ringtone from Ariana Grande, who recently dated and broke up with Davidson. But Crenshaw also highlighted the sacrifice of Davidson’s father, a firefighter who died on 9/11.

And Crenshaw wrapped it up with an op-ed in The Washington Post calling for more political civility, and explaining why he chose not to be outraged about Davidson’s initial joke.

With his star launched by a bad joke at his expense, Crenshaw’s graceful response makes him a new lawmaker to watch.
