After Losing Senate Primary, Disgraced Candidate Joins Local Theater

Disgraced, two-time-losing Senate candidate Kelli Ward is picking up the pieces of her life in Arizona after losing by about 25 percentage points to Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ) last month. And she’s doing it in a surprising way.

HavasuNews.com reported that Ward is joining a community production of “Mamma Mia!” premiering November 2. Ward will reportedly play Tanya, “who is friends with one of the central characters in the musical based on the music of ABBA.”

“It’s going to be exciting to be back in Havasu for one thing and, two, back on the stage doing some community theater,” said Ward. “I’ve always had a love for it, I’ve done a lot here in town, not for a long time, so I’m thankful to Grace [Ann Etcheberria-Jacobs] for giving me the opportunity to get back up there and have some fun.”

Ward said she was “bit by the theatre bug” in high school and has performed in various plays and performances over the years. She participated in a production of “Gypsy” with this same theater group, according to the Havasu News-Herald.

To the relief of many, Ward said she does not have any immediate political ambitions. But given that she has run for Senate in 2016 and 2018, and that there will be elections for Arizona Senate seats in 2020, 2022, and 2024, one can bet that Ward isn’t finished trying.

Rehearsals for “Mamma Mia!” begin October 6.
