After N. Korea Wins, Here’s Where Pompeo is Looking to Shake Things Up Next

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earned a major diplomatic win only a few weeks into his position this Thursday, when he helped return three detained Americans safely from North Korea.

The secretary of state is wasting no time on a victory lap, though.

According to Reuters, he’s shifting his focus to another major nuclear threat in the world: the Iranian regime.

Having returned from North Korea on Thursday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will embark on talks to persuade allies in Europe, the Middle East and Asia to press Iran to return to negotiations over its nuclear and missile programs, U.S. officials said.

…The U.S. hope is that Iran will be dragged to the table by the resumption of U.S. sanctions – and possibly the imposition of more – which would penalize European and other companies and likely cripple Iran’s oil-driven economy.

Pompeo shares President Trump’s hawkish views on Iran and the Obama-era nuclear deal, part of the reason he was an attractive candidate for the job in Trump’s eyes.

It’s clear Pompeo shares Trump’s commitment to removing the U.S. from the deal. The tougher diplomatic challenge for the new secretary of state will be convincing our European allies to join the U.S. in imposing tough, new sanctions on the regime.

If Iranian leaders threaten Europe like they have the U.S., though, Pompeo may be able to convince the UK, France, Germany, and others to take more punitive measures going forward.
