After Report Trump Was ‘Disengaged’ on Shutdown, the President Tweets

Mere hours after one of the reporters Donald Trump knows best wrote that he was “unusually disengaged” from the government shutdown fight over the weekend, the president was back to tweeting about the impasse, blaming Democrats for a shutdown that entered its third day on Monday.

In Monday morning’s New York Times, “Trump-whisperer” Maggie Haberman pointed out, in a joint byline with Julie Hirschfeld Davis, that Trump was “unusually disengaged” over the weekend, which featured days one and two of the first government shutdown since 2013.

The intraparty spat unfolded while Mr. Trump spent the weekend at the White House out of sight and off the airwaves, unusually disengaged, except for some phone calls, for a president who enjoys the limelight.

His only comment on the situation came on Twitter on Sunday morning, when he vented his frustration as the shutdown threatened to bleed into the workweek, complicating his plans for a trip on Wednesday to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and the run-up to his first State of the Union address on Jan. 30.

Mere hours after publication, Trump appeared to ‘re-engage’ in the shutdown fight, with two tweets blaming Democrats for the continuing budget fights:

Some senators have suggested there’s an endgame to the shutdown in sight, but as of early Monday morning, there’s no deal on an effort to re-open government.
