China is sending an official across the border to North Korea for the first time since 2015, and the timing of the move comes only days after President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held extensive talks on North Korea.

The Associated Press reported on Xi’s move on Wednesday morning:

Following President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing, China said Wednesday that it would send a high-level special envoy to North Korea amid an extended chill in relations between the neighbors over Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons and missile programs.

…Song [Tao, the head of China’s Communist Party,] would be the first ministerial-level Chinese official to visit North Korea since October 2015, when Politburo Standing Committee member Liu Yunshan met with leader Kim Jong Un. Liu delivered a letter to Kim from Xi expressing hopes for a strong relationship, although the respite in frosty ties proved short-lived. Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin visited Pyongyang in October of last year.

China “downplayed any connection between Song’s trip and Trump’s visit,” but the timing comes just days after Trump and Xi spent several days visiting with and praising each other.

Trump tweeted on Saturday that Xi is committed to pressuring North Korea through sanctions.
