Air Claire 2? Private Plane Problems Resurface for Vulnerable Senator

A new story from the Washington Free Beacon guarantees that the issue of Sen. Claire McCaskill’s (D-MO) private plane will dog her throughout her 2018 reelection campaign.

The Free Beacon‘s Brent Scher found that McCaskill’s private plane traveled between campaign stops while McCaskill was supposed to be on an RV tour through Missouri.

The Free Beacon was “was unable to determine whether McCaskill traveled on the plane, and her campaign didn’t respond to inquiries.” But then McCaskill confirmed to Politico that she did, indeed, use the private plane during her supposed “RV tour.”

However, she went further than the publication did in confirming that she did use a plane for part of the tour.

“I added some stops with the use of the plane, but I was on the RV so much that the broken drawer drove me crazy,” McCaskill said in a brief Tuesday interview in the Capitol, adding that “I even lost an iPad around a corner on the RV.”

As Politico noted, the issue of McCaskill’s private planes was relevant in 2011 and 2012.

If McCaskill’s reelection bid gets grounded by her flights, it won’t be the first time air travel has plagued her. She sold a private plane in 2011 after acknowledging a failure to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars of property taxes on the aircraft.

McCaskill’s opponent, Attorney General Josh Hawley (R-MO), seized on the report, and dared McCaskill to not use a private plane for the last 147 days of the campaign.
