Sen. Doug Jones’ (D-AL) surprise Senate victory in 2017 shocked the political world, but his tenure could be a short one according to a report from the New York Times.

The reason? Jones “finds himself holding the same position as Nancy Pelosi, the liberal House speaker.” Jones’ position is reopen the government, then negotiate border security.

Mr. Jones is the only red-state Senate Democrat up for re-election in 2020. By taking on President Trump and the border wall, which are both popular in Alabama, and refusing to give ground on the shutdown, the senator may be the last “Doug Jones Democrat” to win here anytime soon.

It’s Jones’ opposition to Trump’s border wall that is troubling Alabama voters, including some who voted for him less than two years ago.

“I voted for Jones, I did,” said Ann Lynch, an 86-year-old retired schoolteacher, as she did her grocery shopping wrapped in a fur coat on a brisk afternoon in Huntsville, where more than half of the local economy is tied to federal spending. “But he doesn’t support the wall. I don’t like that, of course. I think we need it. Trump knows we need it.”

The fact that Jones is in the Senate at all is a bit of an accident. Despite Trump’s best efforts, Republicans nominated Roy Moore to be the Republican nominee for the Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions, who was then serving as Trump’s attorney general. Trump backed Luther Strange, the man whom the Alabama governor appointed to fill the vacancy on an interim basis, and Moore was a deeply flawed candidate, to put it mildly.

Disgusted with their nominee, many Alabama Republicans sat out of the special election, while Democrats and independents coalesced behind Jones. But even Democrats recognize that Jones has gone too far to the left for his own good.

“He’s a dead man walking,” said former Representative Parker Griffith, a conservative Democrat who helped Mr. Jones in his election and continues to support him. “He leaned into his base, and his base is not big enough to elect him.”

Given Jones’ decidedly liberal record, it’s highly unlikely many Republicans will sit out this next election. And thanks to Alabama’s strong conservative voting base, the math doesn’t look good for Jones next year.
