Andrea Mitchell Falsely Claims Broward County Election Supervisor Is a Republican

"She’s hardly a Democratic official or someone doing the bidding of the Democratic candidates there."

MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell falsely claimed that Broward County Election Supervisor Brenda Snipes is a Republican during a segment on Monday.

“We should also point out that Brenda Snipes in Broward County is a Republican appointed by former governor, then-Governor Jeb Bush,” Mitchell said. “So, she was put in by a Republican governor after the mess that we all remember from 2000. And she’s hardly a Democratic official or someone doing the bidding of the Democratic candidates there.”

While it’s true that former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-FL) did appoint Snipes in 2003 to be the Broward County election supervisor, she is not a Republican.

“Snipes self-identifies as a Democrat and has run as a Democrat for her current position,” the Washington Free Beacon reported.

Mitchell is also incorrect in her assertion about why Snipes was appointed. While Mitchell claimed that Snipes was appointed by Bush after the 2000 recount debacle, the truth is she replaced Miriam Oliphant, the previous Broward County supervisor of elections who mishandled the 2002 Democratic gubernatorial primary between former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and Bill McBride.
