Another Bad Headline for the Leaky DCCC in 2018

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) can't seem to stop leaking in 2018, hampering the committee's efforts to win back the House.

“DCCC polling: Dem candidates should be open to working with Trump.”

That was the Axios headline on Thursday, after internal polling at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) leaked out to the press.

The news is bad for Democrats and highlights the continuing divisions in the party over whether to work with or totally resist President Donald Trump.

But the latest report also shines a spotlight on a less-appreciated problem at the committee, known around Wshington as the “D-trip”: it’s leaking like the Titanic.

NTK Network pointed out in early March that people with ties to the DCCC had leaked stories about the committee’s actions and its polling:

“[A]dvis[ing] candidates to not politicize gun control policy in the immediate aftermath of a mass shooting in Las Vegas last year. … Those two emails, combined with a report from The Intercept detailing an effort to get candidates to not wholly embrace single-payer health care, have led a constellation of progressive groups to circulate petitions chastising the DCCC.”

To compound the leak problems, members are also fighting over just how much to embrace or reject House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who may want to return to the speaker’s chair if Democrats do, indeed, take back the House in 2018.

Every week of internal strife at the DCCC is another week they’re not spending trying to win back the majority. What’s more, time is running short: the election is just about seven months away.
