Another Flurry of Meetings for Kavanaugh on Thursday, Including One Key Vote

Judge Brett Kavanaugh has another flurry of meetings with U.S. senators on Thursday, including one Republican who will be key for his chances of confirmation this September.

Kavanaugh is meeting with:

  • Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), the second-ranking Democrat in the U.S. Senate
  • Judiciary Committee members Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Chris Coons (D-DE), and Cory Booker (D-NJ); the latter is a likely 2020 presidential candidate
  • Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), another possible 2020 presidential candidate
  • Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), one of two Republicans – along with Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) – seen as a key swing vote for Kavanaugh

Fox News‘s Chad Pergram had tweeted out Kavanaugh’s roster of Thursday meetings on Thursday morning:

One previously-scheduled meeting missing from Kavanaugh’s calendar? Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI), a Judiciary Committee member who canceled her meeting with Kavanaugh following guilty verdicts and guilty pleas this week for Trump aides Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen, respectively.

Other Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), have since created a chorus arguing the Senate should delay Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing in the wake of the Manafort/Cohen news. Red-state Democrats, like Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), have rejected Schumer’s call:

The Kavanaugh confirmation hearings are slated to begin Tuesday, September 4.
