President Donald Trump’s recent attacks on the Democratic congresswomen known as “the squad” prompted outcry from Democrats and several Republicans to condemn the remarks.

But Trump may have gotten exactly what he wanted when he singled out Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA): a foil.

Trump’s strategy here is essentially the belief that attacking these Democratic women benefits him:

In essence, Mr. Trump’s larger campaign strategy is to paint the Democratic Party with a broad brush and play up conditions that were favorable to him in 2016. This reflects GOP polling that shows Rep. Ocasio-Cortez as the new party bogeyman.

And polling backs up this hypothesis. GOP pollster Neil Newhouse said his findings indicate that 74 percent of voters know enough about Ocasio-Cortez to have an opinion about her, and 64 percent of Republicans hold a negative view of the New Yorker.

Perhaps most interestingly, Newhouse also said that focus groups routinely identify Ocasio-Cortez as the “ideological leader of the Democratic Party,” and they view Pelosi as the “establishment politician.”

“Trump wants to make this into a choice between the way things are going in the country right now — a strong economy, avoiding foreign involvement, etc. — and running against a socialist Democrat,” Newhouse said.

Trump’s strategy is perhaps best encapsulated by a Monday evening tweet:
