AOC Defends Her Tax Plan: Isn’t $10 Million a Year Enough?

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) asked “isn’t $10 million a year enough?” when describing her marginal tax proposal, which would tax individuals earning over $10 million at 70 percent during an interview on Showtimes’ “DESUS & MERO,” which aired on Thursday.

Co-host Desus joked with Ocasio-Cortez about her wanting to tax millionaires just after they signed a deal with premium cable network Showtime. Co-host The Kid Mero asked Ocasio-Cortez to explain her tax plan.

“So, a marginal tax rate is saying if you make more than $10 million in one year, which is a pretty good year–” Ocasio-Cortex began.

“That’s some El Chapo shit,” Desus joked.

“Yeah seriously,” Ocasio-Cortex said. “If you make more than $10 million in one year, your $10 millionth and one dollar gets taxed at 70 percent,” Ocasio-Cortex explained.

She added that under some Republican presidents in the 20th century, Americans had a 90 percent marginal tax rate, which she argued caused the U.S. to experience some of the largest economic growth in history.

“You know what’s crazy? Like, she totally explained it, and I don’t have $10 million, but even though, I’m just like, no,” Desus said.

“It really comes down to the question of isn’t $10 million enough? Like when does it stop?” Ocasio-Cortez asked. “At what point is it immoral that we’re building Jeff Bezos a helipad when we have the most amount of homeless people in New York City?”
