Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) is being pulled to the left, a new Associated Press profile of her 2018 campaign confirms.

AP‘s Sara Burnett wrote:

The same liberal energy that’s led to insurgent Democratic victories around the country is spurring voters she should be able to count on to demand that she move to the left, even as she has to attract some Trump voters to win in a state he carried by almost 20 percentage points.

Burnett noted college students, and other attendees of a St. Louis campaign event, questioned McCaskill about why she supported an immigration deal with funding for Trump’s border wall, and whether she supports NFL players kneeling during the national anthem.

And in a possible sign that McCaskill will continue to be pulled to the left through Election Day, she announced her opposition to Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s elevation to the Supreme Court on Wednesday – not because of any of the allegations against Kavanaugh, but because of his positions on campaign finance.

McCaskill’s opponent, Attorney General Josh Hawley (R-MO), is running with President Trump’s support. Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in Missouri in 2016 by nearly 20 points (56.4 percent to Clinton’s 37.9 percent).

McCaskill is trying to play it down the middle, in an effort to earn the votes of both Trump supporters and Clinton supporters. Playing the middle hardly excites her liberal base, though. It may be why she’s struggling to get volunteers for her reelection effort.
