Apple CEO Tim Cook incorrectly stated that the company doesn’t get involved in politics while speaking at an event at Auburn University on Thursday.

“We work on policy things as opposed to politics. So we stay out of politics,” Cook told the audience.

However, a look at Apple’s political activity reveals this statement is far from the truth. For one thing, The Next Web in 2016 published an article titled, “Tim Cook has turned Apple into a political juggernaut.”

In the article, the author explained how Cook “plays a role in politics like no other CEO in Silicon Valley.”

It goes into detail into how, under Cook’s leadership, the company has become more outspoken on a range of political issues including encryption, the environment, and healthcare – topics that Apple stayed away from under Steve Jobs’ leadership.

The article also noted that Cook has made politically motivated hires, too, citing Apple’s decision to bring on President Obama’s EPA Secretary Lisa Jackson to serve as the company’s environmental director.

While it is true that Apple does not have a Political Action Committee, the company refused to provide any support for the 2016 Republican convention, despite having provided about $140,000 in tech tools to the Democratic and Republican conventions in 2008.

Cook himself hosted a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton and was even included on Clinton’s list of potential Vice Presidential candidate’s.

So while Apple might not have a PAC, the company is still very active in politics despite its CEO’s claims.
