Apple’s Cook Blasted for Appeasing China and Criticizing U.S. Policies

Earlier this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook told shareholders that standing up to the FBI is “the right thing to do.” The context? Federal authorities were hoping to learn more about the San Bernardino shooters by unlocking an iPhone that belonged to one of them.

But when it comes to authoritarian regimes like the one in China, Cook is more than happy to “kowtow,” kiss the ring, and literally bow.

Cook’s recent trip to China demonstrated the CEO’s overeager desire to open markets in China. But in so doing, he’s aiding and abetting a regime that seeks to limit freedom of speech and expression.

This week it was Tim Cook’s turn to kowtow. The Apple honcho was in China at a conference, that, in the words of Bloomberg, was “designed to globally promote the country’s vision of a more censored and controlled internet.” Cook’s appearance at this confab was a symbolic victory for Chinese repression. It also came on the heels of Apple’s decision last month to remove apps that provide for uncensored communications from its Chinese store. Basically, what happened was that Beijing told Cook to remove Skype—and he quickly complied.

Cook’s willingness to support the so-called “Great Firewall,” a political tool designed to censor information from China’s people to quell any potential uprising, is only made worse by his past obstruction of U.S. authorities.

The Apple Inc. CEO, who last year stood up to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, took to the stage at China’s annual internet conference this past weekend to kiss the ring and give his seal of approval for the way the government there tightly controls the flow of information.

While Cook is reinforcing censors and restricting information flow in China, one of his top deputies was quoted in an Australian publication criticizing the American president.

It’s just the latest in a developing pattern that demonstrates Apple puts profits above country and American values.
