Are Dems Ready to Vote Down CHIP to Protect Rich Medicare Beneficiaries?

House Republicans will make another attempt to extend funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) this month, but Democrats may vote it down because of offsets that include asking rich Medicare beneficiaries to pay more in premiums.

The Washington Examiner reported:

House Republicans proposed a new spending bill Wednesday to fund the government for roughly a month and plan to include a five-year reauthorization of the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

However, the reauthorization package that mirrors a bill the House passed last month is likely to pick up strong Democratic objections due to funding offsets.

…House Democrats have condemned funding offsets that include raising Medicare premiums for seniors making more than $500,000 a year and raiding a disease prevention fund created under Obamacare.

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB) wrote in October that a similar change proposed by Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) would result in $5.8 billion in 10-year savings.

It’s going to be hard for Democrats to vote down CHIP in favor of protecting rich people receiving Medicare. But it appears Democrats may be ready to do just that.
