Are These Liberal Billionaires the Biggest Threat to Americans’ Second Amendment Rights?

Billionaires Laura and John Arnold and their family foundation, along with 2020 presidential hopeful and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, could be the biggest threat to Americans’ Second Amendment rights in 2018.

Bloomberg’s advocacy for stricter gun control laws has been well-documented from his time as mayor of New York City, where he co-founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

As mayor of New York, Bloomberg was a fierce advocate for mandatory minimum sentencing for gun crimes. After leaving office, Bloomberg founded and funded Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit group that has aggressively advocated for stricter gun control laws in America and has used misinformation about the number of school shootings in America on multiple occasions.

The Laura and John Arnold Foundation may be less-well known than Bloomberg’s groups, as the Houston-based billionaires have attempted to keep a low profile. But their efforts concerning the Second Amendment are just as great.

Earlier this year, the Laura and John Arnold Foundation announced that they would spend up to $50 million on an initiative to research gun violence in America.

The Laura and John Arnold Foundation-funded initiative is headed up by “anti-gun zealot,” Jeremy Travis, who is a former clerk for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and one of the architects of New York City’s expansive 1990s gun ban.

Before joining the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, Travis “served as president of John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York, where he transformed the college into one of the country’s leading research and educational institutions in criminal justice.”

A 2004 New York Times profile of Travis noted he “has never carried a gun, much less taken aim and fired one,” Travis anti-gun background makes it almost impossible to imagine that the research he conducts on gun violence will be impartial.

But that’s not surprising when you read an op-ed written by Laura Arnold that appeared in the Houston Chronicle, where she stated her fierce opposition to the Dickey Amendment.

For those unfamiliar with the Dickey Amendment, it mandated that “none of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to advocate or promote gun control.”
