As red-state Democrats tell reporters that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) can “kiss my you know what,” a different dynamic is playing out behind the scenes: Schumer’s allies are spending eight figures to reelect those same red-state Democrats.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Senate Majority PAC (SMP), which is run by an ally of Schumer, is spending $17 million in the month of August alone, to buoy Democratic candidates in six states.

The Democrats that benefit:

  • Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-IN)
  • Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO)
  • Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND)
  • Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV)
  • Rep. Jacky Rosen (D-NV), running for U.S. Senate in Nevada
  • Former Gov. Phil Bredesen (D-TN), running for U.S. Senate in Tennessee

All six have tried to distance themselves from Schumer in one way or another. Manchin made the “kiss my you know what” comment. Donnelly and Heitkamp both insisted Schumer won’t have anything to do with their decision whether or not to support Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. McCaskill told Schumer last month to take a “flyin’ leap.” Rosen just released an ad claiming she won’t toe the party line. And Bredesen claims he’s undecided on Schumer for Democratic leader of the Senate.

But the SMP buy reemphasizes for observers – and voters in respective states – that these Democrats’ fates are tied to Schumer and his allies, and their spending in these key races.
