An identical letter, critical of President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, was printed in at least 21 newspapers recently, according to an analysis by the Daily Mail.

Each letter had a different signer, but the text of each matched the others perfectly. The letters appeared in papers large and small, including the Dallas Morning News, the Washington Times, and the Columbus Dispatch. Many of these papers deleted the letters from their online editions after the Daily Mail uncovered the issue. The letters appeared over a four-day period.

Grassroots activism often includes encouraging local supporters to write letters to the editors of their local papers, but this kind of effort is known as Astroturfing – artificial grassroots support.

The White House brushed off the effort as “inconsequential and amateurish,” according to the Daily Mail.

In an email Saturday, White House Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah shrugged off the practice as inconsequential and amateurish.

‘I suppose that’s a clever way to ensure message discipline,’ he said, ‘but we think most Americans will see through these tactics and be impressed with Judge Kavanaugh’s sterling record and qualifications.’

One newspaper editor in Massachusetts admitted, “I got duped, which is embarrassing and frustrating.”
