At CPAC Vice President Pence Takes a Shot at the NFL

"I'm here because I stand with President Trump. I'm here because we stand with the conservative movement. And, come to think of it, we always stand for our flag and our national anthem."

Vice President Mike Pence took a clear shot at the NFL over their protest of the national anthem, during his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Thursday.

“It is great to be back at CPAC,” Pence began. “I stand here today with profound gratitude to say that, because of all of you, because of the conservative majorities in Congress that you helped elect, and because of the strong leadership of the president you put in the White House, 2017 was the most consequential year in history of the conservative movement. And, tomorrow, you’ll hear firsthand from the man who galvanized that movement. And I – I spoke to him on the phone this morning, and I can tell you, he can’t wait to get here.”

“You know, I’m here – I’m here because I stand with President Trump. I’m here because we stand with the conservative movement. And, come to think of it, we always stand for our flag and our national anthem, as well,” Pence declared.

Following this statement by Pence the crowd erupted into applause and chants of “USA, USA, USA,” broke out.

Pence’s statement about standing for the national anthem was a clear shot at NFL players who spent much of the 2017 season kneeling during the national anthem.

In September, Trump attacked the NFL for allowing players to kneel during the national anthem, which set off a wave of protest across the NFL.

The protest resulted in sponsors pulling their money from the NFL, low attendance at stadiums, and decreased viewership in 2017.

One of the only teams not to kneel during the national anthem was the Philadelphia Eagles, who eventually won the Super Bowl.

Pence’s remarks about the national anthem at CPAC were eerily similar to remarks that President Trump made during his State of the Union a month ago.
