ATF Investigates Dem Candidate for Sawing Off AR-15 Barrel

Karen Mallard, a Democrat running to challenge Rep. Scott Taylor (R-VA) in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, found herself in legal hot water after a political stunt gone wrong this week. Mallard, in a video posted to Facebook, took her husband’s AR-15 and sawed off the barrel, a serious felony.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) took notice and opened an investigation, according to a local ABC affiliate:

The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is investigating congressional candidate Karen Mallard after she posted a video on Facebook that shows her cutting apart an AR-15 rifle.

Several others said Mallard broke federal law by taking a legal firearm and altering it, making it into an illegal one. Many of them referred to details contained within the Sawed-Off Shotgun and Sawed-Off Rifle Act which, in part, prohibits people (except for those permitted by the act) from having a rifle that has been “modified to an overall length of less than 26 inches.”

In the Facebook video, Mallard claimed that she grew up around firearms, but she was not happy when her husband bought the rifle. After recent school shootings, she decided to get rid of the gun.

“After last week, I told [my husband] I wanted this gun out of my house, and he agreed with me,” she says in the video. “Today, we’re going to destroy it.”

The Democrat then takes a saw to the barrel of the rifle but does not destroy the gun’s action, leaving it operable.
