Atlanta Charter School Refuses to Recite Pledge of Allegiance

Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School will no longer recite the Pledge of Allegiance to begin the school day, according to a report from the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.

The privately-run, publicly-funded school will instead opt for a more “inclusive and connected” ceremony that includes all of their students.

School administrators cited students and faculty refusing to stand for and participate in the pledge, which is how most schools begin their day. Instead, the school will honor the “global” nature of their population with a new morning ceremony:

“Teachers and the K-5 leadership team will be working with students to create a school pledge that we can say together at morning meeting,” [campus president Lara] Zelski said.

That pledge, she said, “will focus on students’ civic responsibility to their school family, community, country and our global society.”
