Audio of children crying, with one repeatedly sobbing for her parents, is likely to bring new and even more intense focus to the issue of the Trump administration’s family separation policy this week, as the White House already deals with massive, bipartisan fallout on the issue.

The audio, obtained by ProPublica, is disturbing.

ProPublica’s Ginger Thompson wrote:

The desperate sobbing of 10 Central American children, separated from their parents one day last week by immigration authorities at the border, makes for excruciating listening. Many of them sound like they’re crying so hard, they can barely breathe. They scream “Mami” and “Papá” over and over again, as if those are the only words they know.

Everyone from Democrats to House Republicans to former and current first ladies are criticizing the policy, promoted and supported by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The president has vacillated between stating opposition to the policy his administration enacted and falsely blaming Democrats for it.

The audio, though, adds a visceral element to the debate. What’s unclear is if it will spur any change to the policy, either from a divided Congress or an administration that has the ability to change it.
