David Axelrod, who served as Chief Strategist for Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns, said Thursday that former Vice President Joe Biden has some real organizational challenges and fundraising concerns facing his 2020 presidential campaign.

CNN’s John King raised questions surrounding Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign, including organizing and fundraising, and asked Axelrod what he thought about these questions surrounding Biden’s campaign.

“Well, I think the organizational challenges are real. As you point out, he’s never gotten out of Iowa when he was running for president,” Axelrod said. “Part of it is he’s got a very close-knit group of advisers who tend to reflect him, and it’s a very bad thing when you’re running a national campaign to be so reliant on yourself and a group that reflects your strategic and tactical thinking. So, he’s going to have to broaden out that group.”

Axelrod added that fundraising could be a challenge for Biden because he does not have the social media following that some Democratic presidential hopefuls have.

“You can see he’s set up a series of traditional fundraisers early here so that he can show some fundraising strength,” Axelrod added.

“Then there are his own issues. You get the good with the bad and the bad with the good. Joe Biden is utterly authentic, speaks his mind. Often times that can go sideways on him and create stories he doesn’t intend to create,” Axelrod said.
