Axelrod: Going to Be Hard For Beto Not To Run For President if He Keeps It Close In Texas

"I'm sure there will be a lot of pressure on him to think about it. If, in fact, that race is close in Texas."

Democratic operative David Axelrod said, in an interview published Tuesday, that it will be hard for Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) to not run for president in 2020, if he keeps his Senate race with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) close.

Axelrod made those comments during an interview with Politico‘s “Off Message” on Tuesday.

Politico‘s Tim Alberta asked Axelrod how difficult it will be for O’Rourke to come off a losing campaign and become a viable candidate for president in 2020.

“I don’t know, because he has a national following among young people,” Axelrod said.

Axelrod then told Alberta how he recently sat down with a group of “well connected” young people who told Axelrod that if O’Rourke “comes close he’s got to turn around and run for president.”

“I’m sure there will be a lot of pressure on him to think about it. If, in fact, that race is close in Texas. If he gets blown out, I think it’s much harder. But he’s raised a prodigious amount of money,” Axelrod said.

O’Rourke has raised $70.2 million for his Senate campaign, which Axelrod called “presidential level fundraising.”

Axelrod then applauded the campaign that O’Rourke has run and the message that O’Rourke has run on.
