Former senior adviser to President Barack Obama David Axelrod said that he believes it will cost between $100 to $150 million for any Democratic candidate for president in 2020 to get through the first four primary states.

Politico‘s Tim Alberta and Axelrod were discussing possible 2020 candidate and mayor of South Bend, Indiana, Pete Buttigieg, when Axelrod made the statement about how much running in the 2020 primary would cost.

“I think it’s going to take $100 to $150 million to get through the first four contests and beyond in this cycle,” Axelrod said.

Axelrod added that Buttigieg was one of the most promising young leaders in the Democratic Party but that raising the money needed to run for president would be a problem for him.
