Gov. Larry Hogan (R-MD) said Monday that he does not believe President Trump is vulnerable to a presidential primary challenge in 2020 but cautioned that “things could change.”

Last month, Hogan refused to tamp down speculation that he could challenge Trump in a Republican primary next year.

“I would say I’m being approached from a lot of different people and I guess the best way to put it is, I haven’t thrown them out of my office,” Hogan said in February.

But on Monday in Iowa, Hogan appeared to throw some cold water on the idea, at least for now.

In an interview with The Associated Press at a National Governors Association regional meeting in Iowa, Hogan said, “I have a real important day job. I’m not someone who would just run just to make a statement. I’d have to believe there was an actual path to victory.”

“We’ll see. You never say never,” he said.

Hogan did say, however, that he believed Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report will be just the beginning of Trump’s troubles.

He said that he wanted to “get the facts” before passing judgment but that when the special counsel’s report comes out, “I think it’s going to be the start of more questions and more investigations.”

“It’s going to be a long saga for the country,” he said.

In the meantime, Hogan is traveling the country, including trips to early voting states like Iowa and New Hampshire, on behalf of the National Governors Association.
