State Sen. Kelli Ward has had a terrible week.

First, Sheriff Joe Arpaio jumped into the Arizona Senate race, moving Ward to third place in a recent poll and eating significantly into her voter base. She also trails Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ), who is expected to announce her intentions to run for Jeff Flake’s vacated seat on Friday.

Then Ward had to deal with the Steve Bannon fallout. Bannon, the former White House chief strategist who upset the Trump family with disparaging remarks in a controversial new book, strongly endorsed Ward’s campaign last fall.

Ward appeared at a campaign event with Bannon:

Ward even included Bannon’s name in a list of endorsements at the bottom of her press releases:

But now that Bannon has fallen out of favor with Trump, she’s backpedaling faster than Lance Armstrong into a drug-test checkpoint.

“He was never part of my campaign,” Ward, a former state senator, said in an interview on CNN Thursday. “He was never an adviser. He was not somebody that I’d reach out and talk to in any way shape or form, so it’s funny that you and the establishment would love to tie me to Steve Bannon.”

Ward added that she is unsure whether she “ever got a full endorsement from Steve,” although she once touted his endorsement along with those her other high-profile backers, including conservative talker Sean Hannity and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

In an era in which voters value authentic candidates over typical politicians, Ward risks looking a bit swampy by claiming she’s unsure whether Bannon endorsed her or not. And that could hurt her campaign in the August primary.
