Barney Frank: Warren Attacking Dems Over Dodd-Frank Fix a ‘Mistake’

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) “named and shamed” 16 members of her own party this week when she criticized them for voting to fix provisions in the banking regulations known as Dodd-Frank.

“This bill wouldn’t be on the path to becoming law without the support of these Democrats,” Warren wrote on Twitter, according to the Boston Globe.

Another tweet actually included a graphic that listed how each senator voted.

It’s an unusual move for Warren, widely considered to be mulling a run for president in 2020, and it drew criticism from none other than the co-author of the Dodd-Frank bill, Barney Frank.

Frank, who formerly represented Massachusetts in Congress, said that Warren made a “mistake” by attacking her fellow Democrats by name over what he called “a fairly small difference over one issue.”

“These are people who voted against [Supreme Court Justice Neil] Gorsuch, most of them,” Frank said of the Democrats garnering Warren’s ire. “They support abortion rights, LGBT rights, most of them are strong on the climate change issue. To let a fairly small difference over one issue provoke an angry fight is self-defeating for our fight to win back the Congress.”

Frank said he believes naming the Democrats sent the message Warren wanted to “punish” Democrats who backed the changes.

Perhaps the most puzzling part of this entire episode is the fact that Warren needs Democrats’ support if she’s going to win the presidential nomination of her party. That could be why less than 24 hours after blasting these Democrats, she announced she was donating to Democratic Party organizations in all 50 states.

Will Warren’s offering – reportedly $265,000 in all – be enough to wipe the slate clean? It might just depend on how things turn out in November.
