Attorney General William Barr said that he believed that President Trump’s 2016 campaign was spied on while testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) asked Barr about reports that he had assembled a team at the Justice Department to review how the FBI’s investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russia began and why Barr had formed such a team.

“As I said in my confirmation hearing, I am going to be reviewing both the genesis and the conduct of intelligence activities directed at the Trump campaign during 2016,” Barr said. “A lot of this has already been investigated.”

“One of the things I want to do is pull together all the information from the various investigations that have gone on, including on the Hill and in the department, and see if there are any remaining questions to be addressed,” Barr said.

Shaheen followed up by asking Barr why he felt the need to do this.

“I think spying on a political campaign is a big deal, it’s a big deal,” Barr responded.

Shaheen pressed Barr on whether he was suggesting the government was spying on the Trump campaign.

“I think spying did occur. Yes, I think spying did occur,” Barr said.
