Batali, Chef Accused of Sexual Harassment, is a Clinton/Schumer Donor

Chef Mario Batali is the latest powerful man exposed by the #MeToo movement, with Eater New York quoting four different women who accuse Batali of touching or groping them without their consent.

[A chef who was groped by Batali in New Orleans] is one of four women who allege that Batali touched them inappropriately in a pattern of behavior that appears to span at least two decades. Three of the women worked for Batali in some capacity during their careers. One former employee alleges that over the course of two years, he repeatedly grabbed her from behind and held her tightly against his body. Another former employee alleges that he groped her and that, in a separate incident, he compelled her to straddle him; another alleges that he grabbed her breasts at a party, though she no longer worked for him at the time. The woman whose allegations are described above has never worked for Batali, though she works in the restaurant industry.

Unlike many men accused of harassment or assault by women in the last few months – Donald Trump, Al Franken, Roy Moore, John Conyers, Matt Lauer, Charlie Rose, and Mark Halperin among them – Batali is barely involved in the political world.

When he has been involved, though, Batali has put up big bucks for Democrats.

The website OpenSecrets lists four contributions from Batali to political candidates:

  • $1,000 to John Edwards in March 2007
  • $2,000 to Chuck Schumer in February 2014
  • $2,700 to Hillary Clinton in April 2016
  • $1,000 to Hillary Clinton in November 2016

Edwards’ political career was infamously derailed during his run for president in 2008, as he admitted to an extramarital affair with a woman “hired to make documentary videos for his campaign,” even as his then-wife fought cancer.

Schumer, of course, is the only candidate on Batali’s donation list currently in office. Will Schumer return the $2,000 he received from Batali in 2014?
