Bernie: Government Should Guarantee a Job (at $15/Hour) for Every American

Democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who will either run for president as a Democrat in 2020 or be a kingmaker of sorts for the minority party, is adding a government job guarantee to a far-left platform that already includes $2.5-trillion-a-year single-payer and $15-trillion “100% renewable energy.”

The Washington Post had the scoop on Monday:

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will unveil a plan for the federal government to guarantee a job paying $15 an hour and health-care benefits to every American worker “who wants or needs one,” embracing the kind of large-scale government works project that Democrats have shied away from in recent decades.

Sanders’s jobs guarantee would fund hundreds of projects throughout the United States aimed at addressing priorities such as infrastructure, caregiving, the environment, education and other goals. Under the job guarantee, every American would be entitled to a job under one of these projects or receive job training to be able to do so, according to an early draft of the proposal.

The Post noted that even other Democrats are deeply skeptical of the plan, arguing it will “[undercut] a lot of industries and companies” in the private sector, and “be extremely expensive.”

National Review editor Charles C.W. Cooke pointed out (jokingly) that one aspect of Sanders’ plan, as reported by the Post, sounds like it’s taken from the dystopian “Hunger Games” series.

But in the race to the far-left that defines the current 2020 Democratic primary, no big-government policy appears too out of reach. It will be worth watching if some of Sanders’ fellow 2020 Democrats jump on to his plan.
