Bernie Raises $18M as His Campaign Attacks Rivals for ‘High-End’ Fundraisers

Sanders’ campaign manager said it’s better to have the support of working-class voters than rich people at fundraisers eating “parmesan-crusted salmon on toothpicks.”

Bernie Raises $18M as His Campaign Attacks Rivals for ‘High-End’ Fundraisers

Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) campaign reported raising $18 million in the second quarter of 2019 on Tuesday, falling just shy of South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s (D-IN) $24.8 million reported on Monday.

Sanders’ team attempted to inflate the number a bit, arguing he brought in $24 million in Q2, but he transferred $6 million from other Sanders-affiliated committees, per the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jonathan Tamari.

Sanders reported raising $18.2 million in the first quarter of the year, making him the top fundraiser during that period. But so far this quarter that title goes to Buttigieg, who raised $7 million in the first quarter.

Former Vice President Joe Biden entered the primary in April and therefore did not file a first quarter report. But many expect Biden will at least clear the $20-million mark, given remarks he made to a fundraiser audience last month.

But during a conference call with reporters, Sanders’ campaign manager, Faiz Shakir, criticized unnamed candidates – presumably Buttigieg and Biden – for raising money from “high-end donors” at “closed-door fundraisers.” Many of Biden’s fundraisers have been open to a pool reporter.

Going further, Shakir said it’s better to raise money from working-class Americans than courting rich people at fundraisers who eat “parmesan-crusted salmon on toothpicks.”

Sanders’ strong number again puts pressure on candidates like Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who had a particularly weak first quarter fundraising effort raising just $6 million, and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), who raised $12 million in Q1 but needs ratchet up that pace.
