Bernie Sanders Blames Clinton Campaign for Russian Support of His Campaign

He couldn't explain why he failed to publicize Russian promotion of his campaign.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), in an appearance on Vermont Public Radio on Wednesday, seemed to blame the Clinton campaign for not properly combatting Russian interference in the 2016 campaign, saying his campaign warned their Democratic opponents of Russian efforts.

The senator interrupted host Jane Lindholm when she said that the Russians were supporting his 2016 bid to win the Democratic presidential nomination.

“They were supporting my campaign? No,” Sanders scoffed. “They were attacking Hillary Clinton’s campaign.”

The Mueller indictment filed against 13 Russian operatives in the Russia investigation directly cites Russian orders to support the Sanders campaign:

The Russian government instructed its operatives to “post content that focused on ‘politics in the USA’ and to ‘use any opportunity to criticize Hillary and the rest (except Sanders and Trump – we support them).’”

“I did not know that Russian bots were promoting my campaign,” Sanders said. “Russian bots were not promoting my campaign.”

Lindholm questioned why Sanders didn’t tell his supporters that the Russians were using them to damage Clinton’s campaign.

The senator then seemed to blame the Clinton campaign for inaction on the issue. “The real question to be asked is what was the Clinton campaign [doing]? They had more information than we did,” he said.

“Did the Clinton campaign say, ‘Don’t talk about this’?” Lindholm asked.

Sanders denied that such an order was ever given but said that Hillary Clinton could have made a pronouncement about Russian interference herself.

Lindholm pointed out that the Vermont senator would have had more credibility with his supporters.

“We knew what we knew when we knew it, and that’s all about that I can say,” Sanders responded.
