Bernie Sanders Could Be Left Off of the New Hampshire Primary Ballot

There is an effort underway to change a New Hampshire law that would keep 2020 hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) off the Democratic Party’s presidential primary ballot.

Under the existing law, Sanders, who is an independent, would need to register as a member of the Democratic Party to appear on the 2020 ballot.

In 2016, the New Hampshire Ballot Law Commission rejected a challenge to Sanders’ candidacy, but Chairman Bradford Cook warned that “the commission is unlikely to do so again,” according to WMUR.

“The Ballot Law Commission, interpreting the statute as it currently reads, would be required, because it’s our job to apply your laws, to keep him off the ballot,” Cook said. “He did represent to us that in future elections he would run as a Democrat, a statement he made in a press conference after he filed at the Secretary of State’s Office.”

Cook has endorsed legislation that would, “allow a ‘recognized candidate’ to run for president in the party in which they desire to file.”

“We don’t want to be in a situation where we could screw up the New Hampshire primary, very frankly,” Cook said.
