Bernie Sanders Declines to Endorse His Son in NH-01 Race

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) released a statement following the official announcement that his son, Levi, is running for Congress in New Hampshire’s First Congressional District.

“I’m very proud of Levi’s commitment to public service and his years of work on behalf of low income and working people,” Sanders wrote.

But the next part of the statement is where things get interesting. The elder Sanders’ statement not only doesn’t endorse his son, who is running in a crowded primary field, but it seems to go out of its way to say he won’t influence the race.

“Levi will be running his own campaign, in his own way, with his own ideas,” the statement continued. “The decision as to who to vote for will be determined by the people of New Hampshire’s first district, and nobody else.”

Ouch?

Part of the issue could be the fact that Levi is jumping into a race with as many as seven other Democrats. One of those Democrats, state Rep. Mark MacKenzie, has hired former Bernie Sanders aides to advise his campaign.

It’s unclear at this point who Levi Sanders will hire to work on his campaign, but if his father follows through with his tough love style, it might not be anyone from his political world.
