Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) defended Sens. Al Franken (D-MN) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) in an appearance on “Meet the Press” on Sunday.

“Bob Menendez underwent a lengthy trial. There was a hung jury. He was not convicted of anything,” Sanders told NBC’s Chuck Todd.

Todd pointed out that federal prosecutors could retry the case.

“Well, he maybe, but that’s where we are today,” Sanders said.

The senator then described Franken as a “friend” and a “very good senator.”

Sanders implied that Franken had apologized for what Sanders sees as relatively minor offenses. “There needs to be a differentiation between somebody who pats somebody on the backside and somebody who commits terrible acts against women,” he said. The senator then pivoted to accusations against President Trump.
