Bernie Sanders: Senators Need to Vote on SCOTUS How Their Constituents Want

With 10 Senate Democrats up for re-election in Trump states, that may not work out the way he wants.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), in a speech to protesters outside the Supreme Court on Monday, told the crowd that Democratic senators should vote the way “their constituents want.”

Sanders cited his opposition to overturning decisions like Roe v. Wade and issues with decisions like Citizens United, and he called on the group to oppose President Trump’s nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

The socialist senator claimed that the American people backed his side in the upcoming Supreme Court battle.

“Now we’ve got to go state-by-state-by-state to make sure that senators do what their constituents want,” he said.

But ten members of Sanders’ caucus are up for re-election this year in states that President Trump won in 2016. Several, like Sens. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), Jon Tester (D-MT), and Joe Manchin (D-WV), all have to win in states that Trump won by landslide margins.
