A newly released poll shows losing Texas Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) in third place in a national poll of Democrats in which respondents were asked about their 2020 presidential preferences.

Former Vice President Joe Biden led the pack with 26 percent support. He was followed closely by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who ran for president in 2016 and ultimately lost the nomination to Hillary Clinton. Sanders earned 19 percent support.

But it’s O’Rourke, who earned 8 percent, that is the most surprising name on the list. The Politico/Morning Consult poll was conducted after the Texas Democrat’s loss to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in last week’s 2018 midterms.

The third-place candidate is Rep. Beto O’Rourke (R-Texas), who built national name-recognition through his losing Senate bid last week, with 8 percent.

“Beto O’Rourke is emerging to be an outside contender for the 2020 Democratic nomination, outpacing other potential nominees,” said Tyler Sinclair, Morning Consult’s vice president.

O’Rourke’s 8 percent put him ahead of Democrats long-considered to be likely presidential candidates in 2020: Sens. Elizabeth Warren (5 percent), Kamala Harris (4 percent), and Cory Booker (3 percent). New Yorkers Michael Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor, earned 2 percent, while Andrew Cuomo, the current governor, earned 1 percent.

Another 21 percent of respondents said they did not know who they planned to support yet.

O’Rourke has not made any indications that he plans to run in 2020, but he was a powerful fundraiser in 2018. NTK Network reported last week that Democrats are working on a new documentary focused on his Senate campaign. That could keep the 46-year-old in the 2020 conversation.
