Vice President Joe Biden’s political advisers are debating a strategy in which they name failed 2018 Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams as the 76-year-old’s running mate concurrent with his own announcement that he’s running for president.

The two met for lunch in Washington, D.C. last week.

Those in favor of the move are arguing that Abrams, 45, could bring the youth and excitement to the ticket that Biden might lack on his own. The move would show “voters, in the words of a close source, that Biden ‘isn’t just another old white guy.’”

But those oppose argue it could be seen as a sign of weakness or as a gimmick.

Outside observers argue that the fact that Team Biden is having this debate at all “shows some lack of confidence among the Biden team about withstanding attacks for being out of step with the times, and for past positions that are now unpopular in the party.”

One thing is for sure: if Biden goes through with this plan, it would be unprecedented. No successful modern non-incumbent candidate has ever announced their running mate this far in advance, according to presidential historian Michael Beschloss.

The would-be selection of Abrams is notable, as well. She would bring her youth, gender, and race to the table. She was also a successful fundraiser in the 2018 gubernatorial race, if not a successful candidate. And she delivered the Democrats’ response to President Trump’s 2019 State of the Union.

But she’s also largely untested on a national stage, and that lack of experience would bring with it a boatload of risk.

Biden is expected to make an official announcement about running for president in early April.
