Former Vice President Joe Biden told reporters that the United States has an “obligation” to provide health care benefits to all the documented and undocumented immigrants in the country during a campaign stop in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

A reporter asked Biden whether he thought undocumented immigrants in the United States should be entitled to federal benefits like Medicare and Medicaid.

“I think that anyone who is in a situation where they’re in need of healthcare, regardless of whether they are documented or undocumented, we have an obligation to see that they are cared for,” Biden said. “That’s why I think we need more clinics around the country.”

Biden then claimed that a significant number of undocumented immigrants in America are here because they overstayed their visas.

“The biggest thing we have to do is tone down the rhetoric. We know why it’s happening. It’s to create fear and concern,” Biden said.
