Vice President Joe Biden, in an appearance at the Council on Foreign Relations on Tuesday, blamed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and congressional Republicans for the Obama administration’s inability to effectively combat Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Describing the process by which the intelligence community deduced that Russian actors were messing with the election, the former vice president claimed that Republicans shot down a bipartisan overture to fight Russia.

“Why don’t we put out a bipartisan warning to Russia?” Biden said he asked. “Well, [Republicans] would have no part of it.”

“Mitch McConnell wanted no part of having a bipartisan commitment that we would say, essentially, ‘Russia’s doing this, stop,'” he added, criticizing Republicans for allegedly playing political games with the interference.

As for the Obama administration’s response, Biden said they “made the right decision.”

If Obama had gone and given a press conference alleging Russian interference without Republican support, it could have swung the election to Donald Trump, Biden argued. So instead of worrying about Russian intrusions into the American election system, the Obama administration saw a larger danger in handing Trump a talking point.
