Former Vice President Joe Biden claimed that he asked his old boss, former President Barack Obama, not to endorse him when asked about the statement released by the former president after Biden officially entered the race.

Politico reported on Obama’s statement praising Biden but noted that it was a “cryptic message,” rather than an endorsement of the former vice president. Here’s that message:

“President Obama has long said that selecting Joe Biden as his running mate in 2008 was one of the best decisions he ever made,” Obama spokeswoman Katie Hill said. “He relied on the vice president’s knowledge, insight and judgment throughout both campaigns and the entire presidency. The two forged a special bond over the last 10 years and remain close today.”

A reporter asked Biden why, if he’s the best choice for Democrats in 2020, did Obama not come out and endorse him on the first day of his candidacy.

“I asked President Obama not to endorse,” Biden said. “And he doesn’t want to—whoever wins this nomination should win it on their own merits.”
