Biden Claims He’s Raised Nearly $20M So Far

Former Vice President Joe Biden told a fundraising audience Monday night that his campaign has amassed nearly $20 million in donations since launching his presidential bid in late April.

Per the New York Times, Biden told the 180 guests gathered at a hedge fund manager’s home in the Upper East Side of Manhattan that his campaign has received contributions from 360,000 donors for an average amount of $55.

Some quick napkin math indicates that Biden revealed his campaign had raised $19.8 million so far.

Prior to this disclosure, not much was known about Biden’s fundraising levels. His campaign claimed it raised $6.3 million in the first 24 hours after he announced his candidacy. But candidates are only required to report their fundraising quarterly. Biden’s first FEC-required disclosure should come in early July.

Mr. Biden still has two full weeks remaining in the second quarter to gather checks from large donors. He has more finance events in New York scheduled for Tuesday, and a big West Coast swing to the San Francisco Bay Area and Seattle to close out the month following next week’s first Democratic debate.

In the first quarter of the year, the only two Democrats to raise more than $10 million were Mr. Sanders of Vermont ($18.2 million) and Senator Kamala Harris of California ($12 million). Mr. Biden entered the race in late April, after the first-quarter deadline had passed.

While Biden still employs the establishment-style method of fundraising – formal fundraising events, often held at the homes of wealthy donors – several of his primary 2020 rivals do not. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have shunned the practice in favor of low-dollar grassroots donations.

The other 2020 Democrat loudly promoting his fundraising accomplishments this week is South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN), who claimed he pulled in $7 million in the month of April alone.
