Biden Remains Atop Democratic Field in Latest National Poll

Former Vice President Joe Biden continues his reign atop the national Democratic primary polls with Morning Consult’s latest offering. According to a poll released Tuesday, Biden leads the field nationally with 31 percent support, followed closely by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) with 27 percent.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) finishes in a distant third with 11 percent, followed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) at 7 percent, and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, who, like Biden, has not formally announced his 2020 plans, with 6 percent.

But among voters in the key early voting states of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada, Biden’s lead expands to 34 percent, followed by Sanders’ 29 percent. Similarly, Harris finishes in a distant third place at 8 percent, followed by O’Rourke and Warren at 6 percent each.

The results of this Morning Consult poll track closely the results of previously released polls. Interestingly, the outlet also asked voters which candidate was their second choice:

Biden supporters: Sanders

Sanders supporters: Biden

Harris supporters: Biden

Warren supporters: Sanders

O’Rourke supporters: Biden

Interestingly, the results appear to indicate that should some of the less popular candidates begin to drop out, Democrat voters are likely to rally behind Biden or Sanders

That could be, too, because of name recognition and general favorability. Nearly every Democrat has heard of Biden and Sanders, and most Democrats have favorable views of the two. The same cannot be said for the rest of the 2020 Democratic field.
