Biden Responds to Accusation of Sexual Harassment

Former Vice President Joe Biden responded to accusations of sexual harassment over the weekend after Nevada Democrat Lucy Flores accused him of inappropriately kissing her before a political rally in 2014.

Biden issued a somewhat lengthy statement on Sunday defending his actions but adding he will “listen respectfully” to those who believe he crossed a line.

“In my many years on the campaign trail and in public life, I have offered countless handshakes, hugs, expressions of affection, support and comfort. And not once – never – did I believe I acted inappropriately. If it is suggested I did so, I will listen respectfully. But it was never my intention,” Biden said in a statement.

Flores claimed that at a Nevada campaign rally just three days before the 2014 midterms, Biden grabbed her shoulders from behind, smelled her hair, and kissed the back of her head.

Flores, who appeared on CNN on Sunday, said her point “was never about his intentions.”

“It should be about the women on the receiving end of that behavior,” she said. “And this isn’t the first time, and it wasn’t the only incident, where he was acting inappropriately with women.”

Several women have come to Biden’s defense, including Stephanie Carter, former Defense Secretary Ash Carter’s wife who appeared in this photo, which caused a stir back in 2015:

Here’s how Carter described the photo:

It was somber and quiet and the weight of Ash’s new responsibility was palpable. Upon our arrival at the Pentagon, I had slipped and fell on some ice — which a few journalists were nice enough to tweet about. … By the time then-Vice President Biden had arrived, he could sense I was uncharacteristically nervous- and quickly gave me a hug. After the swearing in, as Ash was giving remarks, he leaned in to tell me “thank you for letting him do this” and kept his hands on my shoulders as a means of offering his support. But a still shot taken from a video — misleadingly extracted from what was a longer moment between close friends — sent out in a snarky tweet — came to be the lasting image of that day.

The issue of Biden’s behavior around women is unlikely to go away any time soon. He’s expected to formally enter the presidential race at the end of the month.
