Biden’s Team: ‘You Can’t Let People Say Bull**** and Not Respond to It’

Biden took a beating during last month’s debate, and he’s continued to sustain hits from Booker over his record on race. That changes at the next debate, they say.

Former Vice President Joe Biden’s team is firing back aggressively at critics who claim his record on race and criminal justice reform is part of the problem with the system today.

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) said during remarks at a NAACP event in Detroit this week that Biden was the “architect of mass incarceration” and highlighted the former Delaware senator’s support for the controversial 1994 crime bill.

Biden’s team aggressively pushed back and said their candidate will, too, during next week’s debate in Detroit.

“You can’t be called the architect of mass incarceration and remain quiet,” a Biden ally said. “That’s cruel and personal. That goes against his entire career. You can’t let people say bullshit and not respond to it.”

“The gloves are off,” the ally added. “At this point, you have to punch back when someone attacks your record. People want to see him throw a punch. The president is certainly going to come at him hard, so why not start now?”

The discussion about Biden’s record on race began when the 2020 frontrunner told a fundraising audience that Washington, D.C. functioned more effectively back in the 1970s when he was passing bills and compromising on legislation with segregationist Democrats.

Booker demanded Biden apologize for praising the “civility” of that bygone era. In turn, Biden demanded Booker apologize for implying the former VP was a racist. Biden later did apologize for his words.

But that apology came after Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) blasted Biden on the debate stage in Miami last month over his opposition to busing in the 1970s. Harris saw a slight bump in the polls after that debate performance, making the likelihood of copycat attacks a near-sure thing.

Biden’s debate performance was panned for failing to adequately defend himself. “I’m not going to be as polite this time,” Biden told a fundraising audience on Wednesday.
