Biggest Consequence of Pompeo-for-Tillerson Switch May Be on Iran Deal

President Trump announced, via Twitter on Tuesday morning, that he is replacing Rex Tillerson with CIA Director Mike Pompeo as secretary of state.

Now, according to reports, the biggest foreign policy change in the Tillerson-to-Pompeo switch may be with the Iran nuclear deal.

From The Associated Press:

As CIA chief and Iran hawk Mike Pompeo prepares to run the State Department, the Trump administration is weighing a speedier withdrawal from the [Iran] agreement than even the president has threatened, according to two U.S. officials and two outside advisers briefed on the matter. They were not authorized to discuss the sensitive negotiations publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

…As a congressman, Pompeo vociferously denounced the accord when it was struck.

“The (deal) can perhaps delay Iran’s nuclear weapons program for a few years,” he wrote at the time. “Conversely, it has virtually guaranteed that Iran will have the freedom to build an arsenal of nuclear weapons at the end of the commitment.”

Trump called the Iran deal “terrible” during a press conference on Tuesday, following his firing of Tillerson.

Trump has been silent on Iran as of late on his favorite medium, Twitter. The last time Trump tweeted about Iran was on February 18, almost a month ago:

But Trump was more active in December and January, tweeting support for Iranian protesters. Expect the president to get more active about Iran, and the nuclear deal, if and when Pompeo is confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
