Former President Bill Clinton claimed that America was fighting for its “Constitutional right to vote” during an interview with Newstalk on Monday.

Newstalk’s Pat Kenny asked Clinton about the importance of the words used by the president of the United States and the impact they can have.

“I underestimated the importance of the words of a president in shaping public discourse, attitudes, assumptions,” Clinton said.

Clinton then praised the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) for trying to draw a contrast between himself and President Trump.

“So, it’s not like we never beat up on each other. But, we understood what the framework was. We played on a field, and we weren’t interested in destroying each other. We were interested in fighting for what we believed in and attempting to get something that would work,” Clinton said. “Once you lose that, once there’s no trust, no limits, … it’s very hard.

“In America were fighting for the very Constitutional right to vote,” Clinton said. “We’re fighting for our history as a nation of refugees, you know, aginst polices I thought I’d never see.”
